Strive for excellence, not perfection. -H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
You have to pass, you have to do more than pass, you have to be perfect…. Perfect. Lily bent over another scroll, taking her time, making sure every mark was right, was perfect… was exactly what she wanted it to be. Perfection mattered, perfection counted.
“You freak! I hate you! I hate you I hate you!”
It didn’t matter what Petunia said.
It didn’t matter at all. After all, she was the one at the school for freaks she was the one who needed to earn the grades.
“You and your friend, you’re both freaks!”
It didn’t matter… it didn’t matter as the ink splotched, and spread. Ruining another piece of parchment.
Nothing mattered.
“I sent a letter you know… I sent a letter!”
No one could be perfect in everyone’s eyes.
No matter how hard Lily tried, no matter what cost, what pain, or how late she stayed up at night, studying the stars. She couldn’t be perfect.
But then, they didn’t put perfect on the tops of her essays.
They put ‘Excellent.’
